Traumatic experiences can interrupt the healthy development of our adult selves. As a result, we react to life as a child. Our adult lives are filled with work, bills and caretaking, leaving little time to let loose and have some fun. Over the years our adult life can become stifled and we repress childlike qualities to be spontaneous, passionate and expressive. This can result in negative life patterns in our work, relationships, and other life choices, but through Art Therapy, we can tap into these emotions and heal our inner child. Here is how you do it.
Let go of expectation and judgement
As adults, we become unhealthily obsessed with what others think of us and our work because of how we perceived the world as a child. Before undertaking Art Therapy, it is important to leave these expectations at the door. With the guidance and support of an art therapist you will learn to explore your emotions in different art forms, without external or self-judgement.
Find the right art form
During Art Therapy you will learn to express yourself with a variety of different art forms and mediums. You will be guided by your art therapist who understands how different materials challenge or support the way you relate to the world. Whether its drawing, painting, creating collages or sculpting, you are sure to unlock the child at heart.
Explore different colours and emotions
A trained art therapist will guide you through a series of art activities and how they can express different feelings and emotions. Intuitively and without second guessing yourself, you make choices with art materials to express emotions or events. You then examine your artwork with the support of your art therapist. During Art Therapy you are encouraged to stay in the moment and use colours that you are drawn to, in the way you want to, without considering what the final piece will look like. This process accesses the unconscious to reveal the deeper desires of the psyche.
