Work. Family. Travel. Health. Wealth. Happiness. These are just some of areas of life that people prioritise. Whatever our goals are in life, we need focus to make these dreams a reality. Focusing is the practice of concentrating or converging our thoughts and attitudes towards an issue, situation, experience or goal. Focus is an inner-directed movement that initiates movements towards something that we want or need.
Art Therapy and building focus
Art Therapy and focus go hand and hand. Both focus and Art Therapy arise out of our most primal need to be challenged and to be self-expressed. Focusing is a way of processing our experiences, while art is a natural form of expression – a way of communicating life’s meaning. When you participate in Art Therapy, you are inadvertently improving your focus. To complete a session of Art Therapy you are required to stay in the moment, feeling your emotions and using various artistic methods and mediums to express these feelings.
Art Therapy uses a supportive and open attitude directed towards the focusing process and the creative process. Through guided reflection, an art therapist will help you draw connection between your artistic expression and your feelings and emotions to help you gain a better understanding of where you are and where you want to go. In time you will learn to focus not only in the moment, but on the future and your goals.
